The Old School Way
A few thoughts and take aways from my recent podcast with Jeff Legutki
I recently sat down with South Florida guide Jeff Legutki to talk about what he calls the “old school way.”
I was really excited to have this conversation with Jeff and to pick his brain on some of the principles that shaped the past, and how they could impact the present.
Slow Down
“Hurry is the enemy of intimacy.” When you slow down, you notice the details—the bait flipping, the way the tide pushes, the flicker of a redfish tail. You not only catch more fish that way, but better enjoy the process. In our instant gratification culture we can gain a lot by patiently approaching things, taking our time, and taking it all in. Besides, “You will pass by more than you will ever catch up to.”
Earn It
GPS and gadgets can give you assistance, but they can’t give you joy. The real reward is in solving the puzzle yourself, not having it solved for you. Lean into the learning. Have fun with the process.
Respect the Water & the People
Old school meant earning trust, giving space, and learning the unwritten rules. It was never just about your boat, your fish, your photo. It can be harder today than it was to find open water, but do your best to respect others, learn from your mistakes, and move on.
Embrace the Work
The grind is part of the gift. The missed shots, the hard days, the heartbreak fish—those are what make the wins feel real.
Sometimes the Fish Win
Sometimes you don’t get the shot. Sometimes the fish just beats you. That’s how the game stays alive. Bad light conditions, wind, murky water, and other variables can make fishing challenging…and that’s okay. It allows the fish to rest and reset.
Stay Curious
The ones who last aren’t chasing clout—they’re chasing wonder. They still get giddy when a fish shows up and the line comes tight. They are still trying to learn, trying to figure new things out themselves, and constantly asking questions.
That’s the old school way.
